Part of it is the lens through which the filmmakers cast their characters, part the actors themselves and maybe lastly the critical lesson as to why it's sometimes not a great idea to engage in chit-chat with your cab driver. Either way I recommend seeing it as soon as it's available.

Some pics from the post-film Q&A follow.
Here's a set of photos from the remarkably telegenic cast of the Veronica Mars movie. Which is available to watch at home and a heck of a lot of fun. Even if you haven't watched the series previously. Warning though - the movie did make me go back and begin binge watching the series.
I watched The Infinite Man and 13 Sins. Plus about 3/4 of Premature (long story - should be caught up soon on that one) whose director I interviewed earlier in the day. More on all that's coming (though all are worth seeing in my view). For right now I just wanted to share some of the red carpet photos I took at the world premiere of 13 Sins an in your face thriller that seems to be part of this year's Cheap Thrills like takes on people forced out of desperation to play along with the sick games of the rich. I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit more, though given how many people truly love Cheap Thrills I may not have a ton of company on this one. But comparison aside it's a solid and engaging thriller. But for now I'll leave you with photos of the striking case and director.

I was asked to put together some of my most anticipated SXSW films by another decent sized website as part of their festival coverage. The official list has pictures and other niceties (and some cool companion lists from co-workers to check out. Or it least it will by Friday. For now I wanted to give loyal readers (Hi Mom!) a sneak preview.

They're not generally in any particular order of excitement for me. Except maybe the first few before the jump.

The Raid 2 - A sequel to one of the most fun action films I've seen in years, playing with a packed house the same 2000+ seat Paramount theater where I saw the first one - how could this not be on my must see list. If it's not on yours I question your ability to enjoy life.
Well, maybe not completely - but at least a little bit.

Premature - A high school senior has to re-live losing his virginity over and over again until he gets it right.""
I suspect there are two initial reactions possible to a film that looks like it would've been pitched as Groundhog Day meets American Pie

a. I can't believe they ripped off Groundhog Day?! That's lame.
b. I can't believe they ripped off Groundhog Day and melded it with a raunchy teen sex comedy!?! How can I watch that as soon as possible!

Being squarely in the second camp I'm going to be queuing up for the first available screening of this one.
Also lending a positive buzz I was a fan of the FCU Fact Checkers shorts from director Dan Beers who also headed up Premature.

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter - Love, love, love the idea of a woman from Japan believing that the missing satchel of money in Fargo is real and seeking to find it. I'm actively trying to lower my sky-high expectations to insure I don't hurt what I'm hoping to be a magical viewing experience.

The Infinite Man - "A man's attempts to construct the ultimate romantic weekend backfire when his quest for perfection traps his lover in an infinite loop."
As a sucker for low budget time travel films who keeps hoping to see the next Primer or Timecrimes they had me at ""ultimate romantic weekend"" and ""time loop."

Born to Fly - OK - here I'm cheating as I've had a chance to preview this one and look forward to others seeing it.
If Evel Knievel had been into dance, a bit LESS risk averse and had a borderline cult like following then this documentary would be about him. Instead it's about Elizabeth Streb the founder of ""pop action"" dance. Which is a mash-up of stunt work, acrobatics, dance, and general disregard for the laws of physics and good sense. Oh, sometimes with giant mechanical apparatuses thrown in for good measure.

The dance is truly something to behold onscreen as company members throw themselves at walls, dodge rotating I-beams and generally make dance look more suicidal (or at least masochistic) than I'm used to seeing.
The picture alternates between Streb's history, performances and interviews with her dancers. It's hard not to note the bordering on deity worship that has the young men and women literally risking life and limb to aspire to Streb's punishing esthetic ideals while barely making ends meet. But then again they seem to be having a hell of a lot of fun with their extreme take on motion arts.

Either way - check this one out by any means necessary. Oh - and if someone has a ticket to a live performance by these folks count me in. Seriously - please....

Wild Canaries - A Brooklyn hipster whodunit brought to Austin by up and coming NYC indie filmmakers seems like a great risk to take at a festival like this. Whether it approaches the mumblecore genre blender genius of a Cold Weather remains to be seen but I'm feeling super optimistic on this one.

Only Lovers Left Alive - I go back and forth on the films of Jim Jarmusch. But this one has vampires. Tilda Swinton and great buzz. I'm in!

Boyhood - A drama shot by Richard Linklater with the same actors over a 10+ year span grabs my attention. The positive feedback it's received cements it. Cannot wait to experience all (almost) 3 hours of this one.

Fort Tilden - Frankly, the short summary "A comedy about Allie and Harper and their needlessly difficult journey to the beach"" had my attention from the start. As someone who personally often "neither knows where they are going nor how they plan to get there" the story of two young women attempting to get to the beach in NY with that same problem at hand sounds especially appealing.

Beyond Clueless - "Beyond Clueless is a dizzying journey into the mind, body and soul of the teen movie, as seen through the eyes of over 200 modern coming-of-age classics." I love that IMDb has the genres set for this film as documentary, romance and horror. Any documentary that melds together coming-of-age classics is definitely going to spill into the romance and horror genres.
I have no idea what to expect, but cannot wait to see what director Charlie Lyne has cooked up.

Arlo and Julie - "A neurotic couple's obsession with a mysterious puzzle comically unravels their world, disconnecting them from reality and jeopardizing their fragile relationship.".....

Stage Fright - "A snobby musical theater camp is terrorized by a blood-thirsty killer who hates musical theater.""
Seriously, do you really need me to explain the appeal of musical theater and bloody horror? If so, go find a way to watch the short film [link=tt1632641]The Legend of Beaver Dam[/link] and you'll see what I mean.

We'll Never Have Paris - "A man screws up on a transcontinental level in a noble effort to win back 'the one.'""
I'm a total sucker for this sort of thing. It's absolutely not that it was written and directed by Simon Heldberg of The Big Bang Theory. I actually just noticed that now. But I suppose for fans of his there's another reason to check it out.

Open Windows - Just being the new movie from Nacho Vigalondo the director of Timecrimes would be enough for me to put this one high on my must see list. Throw in what sounds like a potentially interesting plot and a much talked about scene shot at my beloved and much missed South Lamar Alamo Drafthouse ensures I'll be at the front of the line for this one.

Housebound - Being sentenced to home detention with your mom is one level of problem. Having your mom's belief that the place is haunted turn out to be true is another matter entirely. I'm not a ghost story fan in general - but properly executed I can really enjoy the genre. I'm in!

What We Do in the Shadows - New Zealand mockumentary about vampires trying to get by in the big city. It's got vampires, it's got humor. Yes, it seems to largely have the plot of the less than spectacular Vamps. But I'm still very much looking forward to it. Seems like the setup here may have stronger legs.

Among the Living - A group of kids meet their fears personified in something reading like Stand By Me meets any slasher film. I'm intrigued...

Big in Japan - Two things going for this one. It's the latest from the director of Outsourced (which I quite enjoyed - the movie not the TV show) and it's got a strong Seattle connection to the local band Tennis Pro. Sadly its playing a bit later in the festival when I'll be heading back. But I've added it to my watchlist to ensure I don't miss it later.Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11950317076871859382noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27446526.post-39962536647940622502014-03-04T22:33:00.001-08:002014-03-04T22:33:13.514-08:00Free Preview Screening: Draft Day

SXSW Film 2014 is just a few days away. I've been lucky enough to get an early peek at some of the films and am here with highlights from that set. I'll be following up tomorrow with the films I'm most looking forward to personally seeing. Even though I likely won't get a crack at many of them.

So without further adieu here's what I've seen and recommend catching during the festival. Do read beyond the name though - each has something to recommend it, but that thing may not be your thing.

Buzzard - Slacker paranoid coming of age saga or an indictment of capitalism in the 21st century? When dude makes a sandwich of frozen pizza, chips and ranch dressing while taking a break from converting a power glove to a Freddy Krueger bladed weapon I probably could go either way and be happy. The film opens quietly but strong as Marty closes his checking account to exploit a loophole at the bank he temps for. Marty's a heavy-metal digging guy of modest life accomplishments but a self perceived master of the anti-corporate short con as he perpetuates a series of moderately illegal frauds to stay afloat. Frankly, he's not that great at it and when he bites off a tad more than he should including a stack of tax refund checks at work it's easy to see it's not going to end super well. Partially because Marty isn't as smart as he thinks he is, but mainly because he's so living in the now that he's completely blind to thinking even a single step ahead with respect to how things will go wrong. Ah ... Actually, seen as a metal/slacker take on the importance of risk management the director might be able to re-brand BUZZARD as a corporate training film on the consequences of poorly planning.

Marty has an easygoing doofus charm that's pretty appealing. As are some of the cast of characters he hangs with. They're certainly not career focused as evidenced by the amount of time one guy's basement remodel as the "party place" comes up (even as you suspect the guest list is always just the one fellow). Then Marty goes a bit too far with one of this schemes and his world start to unravel. Though probably not as quickly as Marty's paranoia would have him believe. Things spiral from there in ways that are both engaging and likely purposefully unsatisfying.

A clear and clean minimalist vision is at work with BUZZARD. I may not be completely sold but the film definitely held my interest, particularly in the first half. It's worth taking for a ride to see how you react.

Bad Words - An adult with what appears to be a photographic memory exploits a loophole in the rules to make a run at the national spelling bee. Combine that sarcastic foul mouthed cynic with a bunch of kids and pissed off parents and you've got comedy gold. Jason Bateman makes the high concept work to a pretty consistent degree. Even though maybe it falters (or doesn't push hard enough at times) it's still a very entertaining time to be had. Couple this with the energy of the filmmakers in attendance and I'd definitely check this own out with a SXSW crowd (if I hadn't already seen it

Oh, sometimes with giant mechanical apparatuses thrown in for good measure. The dance is truly something to behold onscreen as company members throw themselves at walls, dodge rotating I-beams and generally make dance look more suicidal (or at least masochistic) than I'm used to seeing.

Wolf at the Door - A based on a true story tale that's harrowing, brutal and for at least the first 2/3rds unbelievably engaging. It's a parents nightmare when a young daughter goes missing. Picked up from school by an unknown woman under false pretenses the parents are distraught and the police are at an impasse. It's clearly not money the kidnappers are after - but what's involved is a mystery. At the police station the authorities work back on what happen as the key players tell the story as they know it in flashback. The period where all is being revealed is the sort of can't turn away genre beauty that makes me want to go to the movies. At a certain point the themes emerge and while I was still engaged I felt as though I was discovering less about what had happened than why it had. I'm purposefully avoiding saying more as the less you know the better. It's not a pretty tale but it's going to work powerfully for many. There is a clear comparison to another famous film - but if you're going don't let anyone tell you less you jump too far ahead on what transpired.

Que Caramba es la Vida - is a peek inside the life of female Mariachi singers in Mexico. About halfway through I was surprised to realize that the documentary was directed by German director Doris Dorrie who made Cherry Blossoms: Hanami one of the most unusual and beautiful films I've seen this decade. It's an interesting slice of life film - for me the look into mariachi culture itself was more interesting and touching than the specific challenges faced by women who are less traditional members of that club. In one hand I could've gone for something a bit deeper into the lives of those profiled - but as I was powerfully moved by the final moments of the film it dawned on me that perhaps Dorrie was telling a much more subtle and impactful story about life in Mexico than just a profile of these women. Either way, if Mexico or Mariachi or women interest you it's worth a looksie. Just keep an open mind as what feels like a less than engaging standard documentary at first seems to morph into something richer. I just can't quite say how but it definitely does.

Midnight Shorts (including Chocolate Heart) - I always recommend folks check out shorts at any major festival they're attending. At SXSW I've had tons of luck following my own advice. Given a chance I always try to catch the Midnight Shorts program if you can - at least if you enjoy your shorts strange, twisted and sometimes a bit sexy. This year one of the included films is Chocolate Heart (from director Harrison Atkins) which manages to combine all three. With one of the most unique sexual couplings you're likely to see onscreen this decade .... while still mostly being safe for work. I don't quite understand the significance of the chocolate heart, or the boy whose parents turn into cats. But I assure you you'll never quite look at shaking hands the same way again.

While during March a lot of attention in the film world focuses on Austin and SXSW there are still some great cinematic adventures to be had right here in Seattle. First among them is the Seattle Jewish Film Festival which kicks off this Saturday night. This year’s theme is “The Good, The Bad, The Funny.” Though I expect if you asked the organizers they’d tell you that “the bad” part of their slogan isn’t intended as a critical assessment of any of the choices on offer. There’s something to be had for all interests with events running all the way through March 9th.

Opening night is The Zigzag Kid which sounds akin to a Hardy Boys caper, if they Hardy Boys knew what a bar mitzvah was and included trips to the French Riviera and Isabella Rosellini. The opening night film includes a dessert reception post film. I could make more jokes about the super-gentile nature of the Hardy Boys, but frankly none of them would be especially funny expect to me. But if you want to experience some old school Jewish comedy that actually lands the punch you might be interested in the festival's signature Sunday matinee event.

This year’s Sunday Brunch and film pairing (which I’ve always wanted to attend but never quite get to) includes a screening of the Catskill’s comedian documentary When Comedy Went to School. Perhaps more importantly it also includes a spread of Jewish comfort foods. The film itself catalogs the key role that Catskill Mountain resorts played in the development of the comedy we enjoy today. I cannot say this is the greatest documentary of all time, frankly cheesy CGI production value of the non-interview footage and narration of Robert Klein is pretty groan worthy. But it’s still worth it for the broad set of vintage footage and contemporary recollections about the Catskills. I still chuckle to myself at some of the jokes when I recall them months later. So, add in the promised brunch spread and I think this one will be a winner.

Not surprisingly the festival includes a number of documentaries focused on unique efforts Middle East to try to build trust and have everyone get along. This year's contributions include Dancing in Jaffa and the particularly appealing sounding Make Hummus Not War. The latter chronicling the food everyone in the Middle East loves but that people still manage to borderline violently disagree about how to do correctly. There’s also a documentaries exploring wider questions such as how Wagner’s Jewish fans balance his notorious anti-Semitism (Wagner’s Jews) and why there’s not a documentary about Neil Diamond (the Jewish Elvis) at ever year’s festival (Neil Diamond: Solitary Man). That last part isn't rhetorical, I truly do want to know.

If I had to pick the one that most appeals to my personal off-kilter sensibilities it’d be The Wonders whose description of “part noir, part Alice in Wonderland” had me at “kidnapping of mysterious stranger.” Even without the deal sealing poster featuring odd looking rabbits. What can I say, I like a bit of edge (and rabbits) in my cinema going. Other ones that definitely caught my eye are Hunting Elephants as I’m a sucker for anything hinting at a geriatric crime spree, and Hotel Lux because I’ve simply got to know more about the concept of a Stalin-Hitler cabaret act gone wrong in 1933 Berlin. But don't let my personal tastes sway you - tons of details on all the films (and there are a lot) can be perused on the festival's official site.

Individual screening tickets run $12 (with discounted tickets of $9 available to members of various things including SIFF) for the basic shows, events with food or music will set you back slightly more. If you’re going to see a bunch of films definitely consider their full festival pass ($250/$225) or the super flexible (and aptly named) Flex Pass ($100/$90) which lets you bring a friend along (or not) for up to 8 admissions total. Get all the details on their box office page.

Yep, it's free pass time again. This time for the Titanic of volcano movies: Pompeii. Wondering what it's about? Here's the answer - "A slave turned gladiator finds himself in a race against time to save his true love, who has been betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts, he must fight to save his beloved as Pompeii crumbles around him"Frankly the description leaves me speechless. But if you'd like to grab some free tickets to an early screening just follow this link and if asked for a code go with: POMPEIIWOM19
Alright - back with a new option for free entertainment. This one is Need for Speed which is apparently about car racing, crime and living life a quarter mole at a time. Actually that last one might be another most established racing franchise. But you probably get the idea. If you don't there's a super subtle trailer below that will fill in the blanks. Yes, I believe it's based on a video game. The picture stars Aaron Paul and it will be out in theaters in March 14th.

I don't think it's any surprise to regular visitors that I have a weak spot for teen films, vampires and coming of age flicks. So it someone were going to combine them all into a single package I'd probably be pretty hooked. So it's with some reasonably high (and perhaps unreasonable) expectations that I look forward to Vampire Academy. No, I'm not going to closely read the film's synopsis. No, I'm not going to harsh on maybe riding the vampire craze started by another somewhat derivative teen vampire book. You know, if you'd asked me a year ago if the Jack Ryan series needed a reboot I'd have probably said no. Even more likely if you'd asked if I'd be psyched to see a new film with Kevin Costner I'd have probably chuckled and said no again. Yet, here we are at the start of 2014 and I've got to admit I'm more than a little curious to check out this movie at the first opportunity. I'm big enough to admit when (in a theoretical situation that never happened) I'm wrong.

You can't judge a film by it's trailer, but Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit looks as though it could be a lot of fun. The good news is that I've also got some passes to check it out early. Just click the handy Gofobo link right here to register. Remember that these things are overbooked to ensure a good crowd, so you'll really want to get there early. And no crying, or whipping up some international evil-doer plot if you don't make it in.

The screening is 1/15 in a central downtown Seattle location that definitely doesn't suck. And takes place at the work friendly start time 7pm (though I'd advise more like a 6pm arrival) - so there really are no excuses to skip this one.

You're welcome ... ;-)

PS. I'm also sort of jazzed to see Costner's other upcoming film 3 Days to Kill. Sometimes I just confuse myself.Richhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11950317076871859382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27446526.post-90637773837037332422014-01-03T20:42:00.000-08:002014-01-03T20:42:04.513-08:00Free Preview Screening: The Nut Job

If you're looking for something to do that's kid friendly and love squirrels then I've got a free activity to recommend. It's a free screening of The Nut Job which apparently is some kind of squirrel documentary about some urban rodents who are willing to do whatever it takes to survive - living large outside the law. Or maybe it's an animated feature of some sort. Not entirely sure. But if you want to find out you can definitely pick up some free passes to see it. As always (and especially for a film you'd be dragging your kids to) it's worth remembering that admittance is not guaranteed and to plan to get there early. You can grab passes at this link. The big event is on the morning of 1/11/14 and will be at the Regal Thornton Place theater.
Hey everyone. Another opportunity to see a free film. In this case it's The Legend of Hercules on 1/9 - playing in downtown Seattle. If you're interested just hit the link to passes info below and enter your relevant info. Remember that these things are generally overbooked so arrive early. And, No - I'm not really sure where this Hercules movie fits in with the spate of other Hercules films. You're on your own figuring that out. Actually - if anyone knows (or has the time to conduct what I'm assume is the 90 seconds worth of research to figure that out) please let me know in the comments. All I can tell for the sure is that it's about Hercules, some dude who spends too much time in the gym.
Friday kicks off the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Unfortunately I won't be able to jet down to sunnier skies this year. But I still want to bring as much info to folks who are lucky enough to make it. I've seen a number of films already and through the wizardry of the modern era have access to watch a ton more. While I'm not sure how much time I'll have to keep up this week I'll do my best to post thoughts as I see things. In the meantime here's a rundown on what I have seen and brief notes on each.

Below are 8 capsule reviews. I've also seen The Grandmaster and The Great Passage. Each have something to recommend them but weren't in my top recommendations for 2013. The rest aren't in any particular order - so do read through if you'd like to get my fullest set of suggestions.

One request to readers - please do post your Palm Springs 2014 faves in the comments. Need to do my own planning for the rest of the year. :-)
Still Life (UK)

A slow, absorbing and occasionally blackly comic meditation on life and the loneliness it can encompass. Oh, and death of course. Deeply touching in unique and occasionally shocking ways. Of what I've seen so far at Palm Springs, Still Life is what I'd recommend most. A man's job is to search for family and friends of the deceased who don't seem to have anyone - in order to ensure their funeral is as complete as can be. He puts his back into his work, perhaps unconsciously recognizing that he himself is in such a high risk demographic. When budget cuts threaten his job he sets out to do right by one last unclaimed body. His Sherlock level detective work would make any police department proud, and maybe gives him back some joy in his own existence. What transpires is a short but very engaging piece of filmmaking that I suspect will be a hit at this years festival.
The Summer of Flying Fish (Chile)

From the festival description this film sounds like it's going to be a Caddyshack-esque comedy around a farmer obsessed with carp taking over the lake. Instead it's a slow meditation on the economic and social tensions between wealthy farmers and workers in Chile. So .... not really the same. It's actually the sort of slow burn where you expect something big and dramatic will happen close to the end. Thankfully there's a lot of fine cinematography to hold one's interest - for the most part. Overall this one actually went a bit too far on showing vs telling for my taste. Maybe more accurately not enough showing or telling. If you're looking for slow, moody to the point of borderline punishing and almost nothing but subtext then this one is for you. Didn't really grab me enough to recommend otherwise though.

Hotell (Sweden)
Judging by the song playing in the background as the film begins the ensuing story takes place in the land of the frozen trout. The description sounds light yet Hotell opens with a tragedy and many of the ensuing problems are brutally depressing. The woman at the center of the story joins a group therapy practice to deal with her loss. After their therapist goes on vacation a subset of the group decide to try their own escapist approach to self improvement. Namely checking into hotels and pretending to be anyone but themselves. It's a great setup, and there are a number of colorful characters and definitely some fun moments. Yet wouldn't say any of it is revelatory cinema and it's pretty definitely not really black comedy. I know, I know .... you loved Adam's Apple and it's roughly the same part of the world. Trust me, not the same.

Kidding aside it's OK, and some audiences will love it. For me the disconnect with the description got me off to a bad start from which it's possible I never fully recovered.

It's hard to speak about Last Call without thinking about Almodovar. The quirky characters, the random stuff happening for no reason, the Spanish being spoken. It's all there - but in lesser amounts of awesomeness than his best work. But it's still significantly more enjoyable than his recent film and for that I'll bestow a mild recommend. A troubled production of Caligula cast with all the screwed up characters you'll find in any onscreen stage production. With comments such as "no ... I can't eat organic products. I need hormones, food additives and cable TV to be happy," put-downs such as "You're doing a show 'visit Mexico ... We won't kill you'," and violent Emo stalkers there are plenty of fun moments. I'm not sure it all tied together especially well but the ride is worth it. This one has been growing on me since seeing it in a way that suggests I'd like it even more on a second viewing. Though again to rag on the festival description - "madcap" isn't a word I'd use to describe it.
Mother, I Love You (Latvia)

A film where nothing much happens but a lot transpires. In Latvia's submission to the 2014 Oscars a boy living with his single but professionally successful mom gets himself in a mess of scrapes. Told from the youngster's perspective it's both a slice of life and coming of age tale as he struggles to understand the impact of untruthfulness and to build a more adult relationship with his mother. This one held my attention all the way through and I'd recommend checking it out.

Transit (Philippines)

A docu-drama covering the plight of Filipino workers in Israel. Specifically around the deportation of their pre-school children. No real context is given for the "new" Israeli policy that the Israel born children of resident workers cannot stay with them - except that a new government enacted it in 2009. Even without dramatization it's hard not to see how such a policy, particularly one changed suddenly could be crushing to real humans. The film of course brings it to life more fully, though never really hit me like the ton of emotional bricks I was expecting. Maybe because a significant amount of the dialog feels simplistic and overly direct. Though what's lost there is gained back by slick and professional production values as the story is told from the perspectives of each of a mixed family of participants. The acting talent also feels better than the written material, especially the performance from the youngest member of the family, Joshua.

Bottom line ... you could probably do worse than Transit, especially in getting a peek inside a culture you probably don't know much about, inside another foreign culture to most American audiences. Just don't expect it to be a deep, deep treatment of the subject. And if you're a cynic like me your identification with the characters may not be enough of a mind meld to pull you completely into tears-ville. Given the subject matter that's what I feel should've been happening at least halfway through the film.

Vic + Flo Saw a Bear (Canada) - I've only seen Denis Cote films, Curling and Bestiarie. Both are uniquely different artistic works. I quite enjoyed Curling years back. Bestiare struck me less strongly but it still was an interesting piece. From these two examples I picture Cote's work as slow, methodical and hard hitting. The film is the story of a 60 something ex-convict, who after being paroled takes up residence in her uncle's small, countryside sugar shack along with her younger female lover. The pair go on with life, dealing with misaligned goals and a caravan of intruding characters. It's the sort of slow, uneventful but engaging flick I often enjoy. But the entire time I kept wondering what brought this into the Fantastic Fest family, which is where I originally experienced the film. Sure, there are hints to past decisions - some clearer than others. And characters are dealing with issues and pain from complex prior lives. So, lots to interpret and think about but I'm still not sure ... until a point where it becomes very, very clear how this film got selected for a genre festival. In addition to the fact that it's very good. May not be a hit for those looking for something fast and rushed or perhaps somewhat disturbing. But the slow complexity - depending on your view almost nothing happens onscreen OR a ton of everything is shown via actions, looks and minimal dialog - definitely worked for me.

Two Lives (Germany/Norway)
Family drama or political thriller? - I'll let you be the judge. Born of the legacy of WW-II when children of German soldiers and Norwegian women were taken away Two Lives turns this real life problem into something you'd find in a spy novel. I won't say anymore as the film is best experienced cold. I definitely liked it, Two Lives falls just a notch below my strong recommendation threshold. But I do think many Palm Springs attendees will really dig it.
