Don't even bother reading this review if you're at all pressed for time. Just don't see this craptastic cinematic voyage. In fact, I'll do one better. If you absolutely feel like you must, first have a friend restrain you. Then go see Apollo 54. That was previously my least liked film this year. But in retrospect I was too hard on it. It was an honest attempt at a different sort of thing than you normally see, and had a few genuine sparks of originality. Just because it didn't work out I hold no ill will for the attempt. And then there's August...The story of a .com desperately trying to stay above water after the bust. Though technically mostly just trying to stay above water until the founders can dump their shares. Most likely leaving all the rest of the employees to crash and burn since they're often locked in much longer. I think it's intended as a basic story about that era and relationships around those sorts of companies. Or maybe it's intended to be about hubris and greed (which is more accurate in this case). Either way it totally sucks. The characters are barely one dimensionally written, the acting is tragic, and the company is so roughly sketched with buzzwords it's laughable. Now there were a lot of companies in that time where even those in the know didn't fully believe in their story. I think I know which company this movie is supposed to be loosely based around in terms of business model. And it was never clear to me why they achieved the valuation they did. But the descriptions you hear being given at business meetings are so ridiculous that these folks would have been laughed out of every room in America. Bottom line - this is insulting to your intelligence. Even Bubbles from The Wire (as the CFO of the fucked company) can't save a scene.
Stay away.
